Welcome to Separate Finances

By Bob Horton | March 13, 2008

Introduction

Divorce is one of those life events that most people think won’t happen to them, but it does happen to almost half of all married couples. It’s emotionally jarring and totally disruptive. And to make matters worse, you are forced to confront many life changing choices at a time when making any decision can be a struggle.

The purpose of Separate Finances is to focus on one critical component of separation and divorce – personal finances. I am both a certified financial planner and a certified divorce financial analyst, working in New York City and Old Greenwich, Ct. I’m also a former journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Boston Globe, Washington Post and many other major metropolitan newspapers. I’m hoping this Separate Finances evolves into a forum where information and opinions are exchanged and people can get answers to questions about anything financial. I plan to provide new posts at least twice a week, and will cover such subjects as getting organized for divorce, income and cash flow, finding hidden assets, keeping the house, and many others. I will also answer questions, so let me know what’s on your mind.
